Jenia Johnson of Wenden Elementary School was named the 2010 La Paz County Teacher of the Year at an awards banquet held April 23rd at Salome High School. Ms. Johnson’s focus is teaching sixth, seventh, & eighth grade language arts. She speaks four languages, plays several musical instruments, and is very artistic. According to the Wenden Superintendent, Gloria Dean, “Our students benefit from her multiple gifts because she is able to integrate art into content areas and shares her music ability by providing after school services to students who are interested. She is able to make complex material understandable and to redesign her classes and differentiate instruction based on the needs of her students.”
An added feature to this year’s program was listening to Amy McBroom, 2009 National
Rural School Teacher of the Year, from Grand Canyon Unified School District. McBroom

The Teacher of the Year selection process starts at each school where a school winner is chosen. That teacher completes a written application and is interviewed by a panel of education, business, and community people who name the county winner. Besides Johnson, the other honorees included: Nancy Connelly, Bouse School; Russ Williams, Ehrenberg School: Tom de Gruyter, Quartzsite School; Andrew Kauffman, Salome High School; and Julie Penrod, Salome Elementary School.
Thanks to a major donation by Arizona Public Service Company and the support of many other community organizations and donors, the event celebrated its fourth year honoring teachers. A treat for all attendees was the fabulous meal prepared and served by the Culinary Arts Students from Salome High School. Under the direction of their instructor, Lowette Dihel, they have taken home many awards at the state level and always provide excellent service along with the great food.
Josh Hoffman, 2009 La Paz County Teacher of the Year, provided a wonderful media presentation that delighted and inspired everyone in the audience. He teaches science and technology at Salome Elementary School. According to Janice Shelton, La Paz County School Superintendent, “Five of the six districts in the county participated in this year’s program with hopes of including all districts in the future. We are very pleased with the business, organization, and individual donor support during our fourth year. It is a wonderful tribute to the dedication, caring attitude, and quality of our teachers. I would also be remiss if I did not mention the wonderful cooperation of the district administrators in the county. La Paz County is small and rural but we are mighty in our efforts to provide a high quality educational experience for our youth.”
